Abstract:

Adverse work factors seriously threaton the health of stone mine workers. The application of pe'mnal protective equipments (PPE) as part of the safety management actions has an important role in controlling and reducing mine workplace slressful factors. Therfore this research was carried out to study the knowledge , attitude and practice of workers toward the use of PPE. In this cross-sectional study, a questionnaire was employed for data collection. The questionnaire consists of 10 questions for demographic characteristics, I5 ones for Knowledge assessment , 10 ones for attitued by likert method and a checklist for parctice observation . 'I%e validity and reliability of the questionnaire were confmed by specialists and test retest method , respectively. 86 workers were selected randomly from open stone mines and related industries . The obtained data was presented and analyzed by descriptive statics , x2 and spearman tests. The findings showed that the knowledge of workers toward the recognition of PPE was fairly desirable (83% of correct answers), while it was undesirable toward the why of their usage and maintenance (38% of conect answers). The attitude of 21% of workers to the neccessity of PPE were negative and 50% belived the these equipments reduce the work efficiency. In contrast, 84% of workers had positive attitude toward s the importance of PPE in providing health and preventing and occupational damages . the performance observation suggested that 35% of workers used th PPE imperfectly and only 213% of them used the PPE relatively desirable. No placed had complete appropriate PPE and none of the workers had passed saefly education . There was singnificant correlation between attitude and work history (P=0.033) as well as between attitude and educational level of workers(P-0.001). Meanwhile there was significant correlation between knowledge and educational levei(P=O.03 l).Regarding the results of the present study it the seems that the workers performance towards the use of PPE is undesirable & weak, while their attitude toward the neccesity of PPE in most of them is positive ; so it suggested to do necessary actions for successful safety programs specially workers education in relation to the use of PPE.
