Abstract:

Background: Silica is the most common minerals on earth. Exposure to dusts containing free silica are associated with pulmonary injures, in final can result in silicosis. The purpose of this study is measurement the total and respirable dust and it's free silica at Emarat lead and zinc surface mine. Materials and method: Sampling was done based on 7500 number of NIOSH. The levels of exposure to total and respirable dust were measured by personal sampling. The level of dust was quqntified by gravimetric method. The dust samples had been analyzed for free silica content by X-ray diffraction method. Results: The mean exposure to respirable dust in units of drilling and damping were 2.81 and 2.61 mg/m3 respectively. Also the mean exposure to free silica respirable dust in these units were 0.5 1 and 0.47 mg/m3 respectively. These avareges are 5.1 and 4.7 times of standard of Iran (OEL) and 10.2 and 9.4 times of standat ACGIH(TLV) respectively. Conclusion: Results showed that the mean concentration of free silica in respirable dust of different units in the mine exceed the allowable concentration. Thus should be controled the production of dust.
