Oeeupational Lung Diseases at the Stone Crushing and Sand Industries (Kermanshah, 2002)

Abstract:

This descriptive study was carried out at the stone crushing and sand industries in Kermanshah , to survey the occupational lung diseases among the workers. In the study 30 workers were assessed for their lung functions. All of the workers were exposed to silica dust because of their job nature. A questionnaire was used to record workers characteristics. A portable spirometer was also used to test their lung hctions. Diagnosis of silicosis and tuberculosis was done by using X ray chest radiography. Clinical examinations were done by a doctor. The workers, age was 39.5 ?? 10.6 years. They had 12.7 rt 7.6 years services . 30 percent of them had smoking habits, and only one of them weared respiratory mask at work. The presenting complaints included cough (36.7%), asthma (53.3 %) and having sputum (30%). The lung function results showed that 16.7 % of them had different degree of obstruction (mild moderate and sever) and 40% of them had mild restriction. Radiological opacities showed that 16.7% of the workers had silicosis and only one of them suffered from tuberculosis. As silicosis is not remediable in progressed stages, so a complete schedule must be applied to distinguish and prevent the disease at such workplaces.
