Abstract:

The undesirable impacts associated with the presence of sulfur in coal consist of environmental pollution and steel quality decreasing, have led to development of new process to remove sulfur from coal. Conventional methods consists table, jigging, heavy media, flotation and agglomeration can remove about 70 % of inorganic sulfur whiles organic form will remain in coal organic matrix. In this investigation determination of forms of sulfur and its chemical and biological removal methods are discussed. The studies are shown pyrolysis can remove about 30 % of organic sulfur while reduction by hydrogen have been removed a higer percentage of sulfur. Electrochemical oxidation can be performed with various oxidizing agents such as copper sulfate and iron chloride. It has been found that diffusion of the cation through the pores in coal on high presser and temperature is the rate determining step in the mechanism. Organic solvents such as ethanol and methanol could remove about 28.8 of organic sulfur in high pressure and temperature. Microwave, ultrasound and gama irradiations are used in combination with the other process for enhancing of sulfur reduction. Microbial flotation and bioleaching are using as successll methods because of their low energy usage.
