Abstract:

Cobalt metal is one of the essential and important elements in various industries. Conventional methods for recovery of cobalt need concentrating of the ore and its refinery in high temperature and pressure in a series of chemical processes. Cobalt mainly exists in pyrite and arsenopyrite. A conventional method for its extraction is pyrolysis with oxygen. In pyrolysis, sulfur in the ore is convated to SO2 and arsenic to arsenic oxide. This process causes pollution of the air by effluent gases. A few members of bacterial species are capable of oxidizing sulfide mineral to liberate the costly metal. The major types of bacteria, in this regard are: Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans. The purpose of this research is to study the performance of these bacteria on the extraction of cobalt from a cobaltiferous ore which was obtained from Eghlid mine, in the batch system. Recovery of cobalt was 97% for the mixed culture and 67% for the monoculture. Also primary studies on Ghamsar Kashan cobaltite ore have been done.
