Abstract:

In recent years a significant amount of research has focused on different lixiviants as alternatives to Cyanide. After the discovery of cyanide as an outstanding lixiviants for gold recovery, Cyanidation was so economical and effective that it not only was applied to new ores and tailings, but also rapidly replaced other leaching systems. However, environmental problems related to implementation of this material, its inefficiency in recovery of some particular gold ores (Refractory gold ores), and some economical aspects caused a significant attention to its alternatives. In this paper some of the most important gold lixiviants are reviewed and five of them are compared: Cyanide, HypochloriteIChlorite, Bromine/Bromide, Ammonium Thiosulfate/Ammonia, and Thiourea. The conclusions demonstrate the superiority of Cyanidation system for extraction of precious metals in many ways including economics, health and safety, and simplicity.
