Abstract:

Cocentration of solphorin zinc minerals is one of the important issues in the mineral processing industry. Sodium cyanide is mostly used in iranian mineral prosessing systems for pyrite depression. In most Iranian zinc facilitia including Amarat Plant in Arak, final recovery of zinc is made through hydrometallurgical method using sodium cynide, then the produced wastewater is released into tailing without treatment. Since the tailing dams are constructed without environmental engineering concerns, therefore ground and surface water pollution is inevitable. Daily consumption of about 2 kg of sodium cyanide in this facility without recovery of sodium cyanide is the main environmental concern. In this paper, environmental and health problems in the lead and zinc mineral processing industry are discussed by investigating the source and the characteristics of pollution in each process and the environmental impact on air, soil, water and human health. Then, the waste reduction techniques, cyanide recovery, lead & cyanide clean up methods are suggested and a possible alternative chemical component with sodium cyanide is described.
