چکیده مقاله:

Background and purpose: Hypercholesterolemia (high serum cholesterol) is one of the most important factor of liver and hepatocyte damage. Consumption of fat-rich food is associated with obesity and related alteration such as hypercholesterolemia and finally non-alcoholic fatty liver (excess of fat in hepatocytes). Fatty liver causes deregulated liver expression of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and the activity level of ALT is a typical marker of hepatocytes damage. Foeniculum vulgar (Fennel) is indigenous to the shores of the Mediterranean but has become widely naturalized and used in many parts of the world. This plant is a highly aromatic herb with culinary and medicinal uses. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of hydroalcoholic extract of fennel on ALT activity level in hypercholesterolemic rats. Materials and Methods: 28 male Wistar rats weighting 150-170 g were randomly divided into 4 groups: 1. control (normal diet) 2. control normal diet treated with extract 3. high-fat diet (HF) 4. HF treated with extract. The third and fourth groups were fed with cholesterol-rich food (including 1% cholestrol) for 8 weeks. After 8 weeks, hydroalcoholic Fennel extract was administered by intraperitoneal injection for second and fourth groups. The rats’ blood was taken from their eyes vein plexus before and after injection to be certain of hyperchlosterolemia. After serum sample centrifuge, the ALT activity level was measured and analyzed by ANOVA. Results: Obtained data show that high-fat diet could significantly increase ALTactivity level in HF rats (62.52) in comparison with control animals (37.71)(p<0.005) and the extract could significantly decrease ALT activity level in HF rats treated with extract (47.19) in comparison with HF rats (62.52) (p<0.01). Conclusion: The hydroalcoholic extract of FoeniculumVulgar seed has hypolipidemic capability and can decrease the ALT activity level and improves the liver function and could be used as a medicament.
