A Discussion on Foundation of Shikili House

Shikili is a type of vernacular house in the north plain of Iran, Gilan. It has a special foundation that some experts have regarded as a sliding base isolated system. Considering basic principles of such system, this paper discusses structural behavior of this type of foundation to examine whether what has been ascribed to it is correct or not. The results show that this system reduces maximum acceleration applied to a building subjected to seismic excitations in special condition that actually makes it inefficient: It challenges rational approach and indicates we should have a holistic vision to the study of green building.
