Functioning principles of GPC system and how to determine the intrinsic viscosity of polymers by Gel Permeation Chromatography

GPC system essentially consists of a precision pump that carries mobile phase (solvent) with the speed of the fixed and certain flow rate through the stationary phase (column). The sample is injected into the system on the way of the mobile phase and before reaching the column; it then enters the detector after separation inside the column. In this type of chromatography, the column is filled with materials, which have precisely controlled pores, and the sample is screened and drained from the column due to the differences in molecular size. In this paper, structure and principles of GPC system are reviewed. The results obtained indicate that GPC system not only has various applications such as determining molecular weight and molecular weight distribution but also it can be used to determine viscosity
