Functionalization of Chitosan to Access Potential Chemotherapeutic Agents

Chitosan is a cationic polysaccharide which exhibits many biological properties. One of importantproperties of chitosan is its anti-bacterial activity. In this research, N-acylated chitosan derivatives wereproduced in two steps. In the first step, different phenols underwent the reaction with bromoacetic acid toproduce the corresponding carboxylic acids. The next step is preparation of N-acyl chitosan derivativesfrom a mixture of chitosan, N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) and the preformed carboxylic acids.
