Given the paradigm shift from “Closed Innovation” to “Open Innovation”, there seems to be a need for a systematic mechanism for exploring and evaluating alternative external technologies as well as the business models that may appropriate to capture value from those technologies. At the first glance, Technology Roadmapping (TRM) seems to be a proper tool for playing this role. However, to make the most of TRM concept, it should be analyzed in Open Innovation context and solutions should be provided to overcome its probable limitations. This paper examines the limitations of using TRM in this new context and suggests a modified framework, Open Innovation Roadmapping (OIRM), as an effective technology management and planning tool in this new paradigm.
