Children’s Story: FromWriting to Teaching

The story is perhaps the most important aspect of any good book. Consultsome of your favorite books (children's or otherwise) for inspiration, but dowhat is right for you. Choose a story that fits your interests and talents, such asaction, fantasy, or mystery. Picture books are quick reads, lots of fun, andoften gems of characterization, mood, and dialogue. They are also perfect forteaching the beginning writer—regardless of his or her age—how to organizeplot logically.Many writers start new works by capturing tidbits of ideas onscraps of paper, in journals, or on tape. But how do we make sense of thoseramblings? This question leads to a classic step inteaching writing often calledpre-writing. (The traditional educational steps being: prewriting,drafting,revising, proofreading, and publishing.) It also points to what I consider one ofthe most important early steps in story-making—creating organization withplot structure.
