Sociolinguistics Insights and Challenges of Teaching in EFL Classes (A Reaction Paper)

Sociolinguistics, the descriptive study of language in society, is regretfully a Cinderella term in teaching and learning a foreign language. To illustrate, sociolinguistics is about how language is used within different cultural groups, political factors, ethnicity, religion, status, gender, education, age, geographical location and socioeconomic classes. Interestingly enough, sociolinguistic competence has been an integral part of communicative competence in that it includes learning pragmatic and sociolinguistic knowledge about how to use language linguistically and socially appropriately. In essence, it refers to an understanding and involving the mastery of social-cultural code of language use to appropriately apply vocabulary, register, style, etc. in a given situation. However, involving and implementing sociolinguistic in language teaching and learning has long been neglected. Accordingly, the current review paper is to shed light on the challenges of implementing sociolinguistic and the methods of its application in language classes.
