Can Morphological Awareness Pave the Way for Reading Comprehension of Iranian Advanced EFL Learners?

This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between morphological awareness of Iranian advanced EFL learners and their reading comprehension. The study was administered on 47 English language learners at Iran Oxford Institute in Bushehr. To answer the present study’s questions of morphological awareness and its relationship to reading comprehension, two tests were adapted to the purpose of the study: Reading Comprehension Test and Morphological Awareness Test with its two subtests (analysis and synthesis). Initially, the Reading Comprehension Test was administered and then, the Morphological Awareness Test was given. Then, the results were correlated in order to explore whether there is any significant relationship between Iranian advanced learners’ morphological awareness and their reading comprehension.The results of the analysis for the collected data indicated a significant relationship between morphological awareness of the learners and reading comprehension. Furthermore, the findings revealed that there is a positive and significant correlation between each of the two aspects of morphological awareness (i. e. analytic and synthetic) and reading comprehension of the learners.
