چکیده مقاله:

Success in education in general and in language learning in specific is affected by a variety of individual differences one of which is emotional intelligence. According to Bar-On (2004) emotional intelligence refers to an array of non-cognitive capabilities, competencies and skills that influence one’s ability to succeed in the coping with environmental demands and pressures. The present study was an attempt to investigate the way emotional intelligence influences the comprehension of passages in different genres. To do so a group of 45 linguistically homogeneous EFL university freshman were given a reading comprehension test including 3 passages in literary and 3 others in scientific genres. The subjects were then asked to fill out the Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory. The two responses were then gathered and analyzed. The results showed while the success in comprehending the two types of genres was in relatively high relation with the subjects’ emotional intelligence, this relation was different regarding the components of emotional intelligence. Success in comprehending scientific genres was in positive relation with all components of emotional intelligence except social responsibility, empathy and optimism while comprehending literary texts showed positive relation with all components of emotional intelligence except social responsibility and reality testing. The findings of the study can shed further light on the important role of genre type in reading comprehension.
