How Iranian requestors make arequest: The effect of request mode

The present study was conducted to investigate themodes of requestused by the Iranian university student requestors. For this purpose, aresearcher-made Status-ModeRequest Questionnaire (SMRQ) was developed and administered to 40 students of Ilam University, Ilam, Iran. From the given responses, 240 request modes were detected and categorized into eight groups.Results of the analysis showed that, ‘Telling the truth’followed by ‘Intimate and frank appeal’were regarded as the most favorite modes of request. Furthermore, the study showed that‘Promise for compensation’ and ‘Telling a lie’ were less likely to be used by the requestors.It is hoped that the results of this study, thus, will be of help in further understanding ofraising cultural awareness in language classes.
