The present descriptive study aimed at investigating the types and frequency of interlingual and intralingual errors and their subcategories in Kurdish EFL students' essay writings and also to find out if the two dominant dialects of Kurdish in Marivan interfere with the way male and female students write essays. Sixty intermediate students participated in this study. The obtained data were analyzed using SPSS 19. The participants made 3864 errors among which 1617 were interlingual and 2247 intralingual. Their performance also varied considering their gender and dialect. The results indicated that the number of errors committed due to the influence of their mother tongue was a lot less than the number of errors made regardless of learners’ language background. In conclusion, errors do not have to be considered as the absolute failure of the students, but instead they can be invaluable if sufficient feedback is provided by teachers.
