Who Gazes Back in the Mirror? :A Post-structural Account Of the Embodied Other in Raymond Carver's Neighbors” (Style: Times New Roman,16pt, Bold, Title Case)

This study investigates a very significant human condition, i.e. the confrontation of the self with the Other in Raymond Carver's "Neighbors". The post-structural reading of Carver's short story "Neighbors" is in respect of the idea of the embodied Other using the theories of Hegel, Judith Butler, Jean Paul Sartre and Jacques Lacan.The main characters of the story, the Millers, are enmeshed in a critical human condition; the confrontation with the embodied Other. In this battle between the self (master) and the slave (Other), they are consumed by their Others (their neighbors the Stone family) instead of negating them. The Body becomes the locus of agency and potentiality in the battle between self and Other in their pursuit of the unattainable perpetual identity. By the end of the story, the Millers are libidinal bodies in quest of their unfulfilled potential, i.e. their Other.
