چکیده مقاله:

From the past decades so far, the notion of collocation is one of the cornerstones of corpus linguistics, and hasbeen the subject of substantial speculation and empirical research. To this end, the present study was an attemptto review the viewpoints of ELT students at three different majors of English Literature, TEFL (teaching Englishas foreign language) and translation studies at BA level towards the semantic and communicative notions ofNewmark in translating the collocations of the Lord of the Flies novel. Hence, some collocations randomlyare selected in three categories of verb-noun, verb-preposition and verb-adverb and their translations werereviewed from four different translations and after preparing a questionnaire and distributing it among ELTlearners, required data for this research was collected. The results of researcher-made questionnaire andinterview from the participants under study revealed that there is no significant difference in the attitudes of ELTlearners with differences in majors about semantic and communicative translation of verbal collocations. Theresults indicate that semantic and communicative translation has equal appealing for these three differentmajors. This study has some implications for translators and syllabus designers.
