چکیده مقاله:

Background: Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome (PRES) is a syndrome characterized by headache, confusion, loss of consciousness, seizure and visual disorder. Various medical conditions including pregnancy complications may result in PRES. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the incidence of delayed seizure in patients with Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome and its relation with imaging findings in patients referred to Zahedan city hospital. Methods: This descriptive-analytical study was conducted on 38 patients with PRES referred to Zahedan city hospital. Patients’ information was extracted from their medical records. We followed up patients at least for 9 months and analyzed the association between late seizure and findings on MRI in patients with Eclampsia/preeclampsia related neurologic signs. Results: Among all patients, 31 patients (81.57%) had eclampsia and 7 patients (18.43%) had preeclampsia. Late seizure was reported in 2 patients (5%). The most common findings on MRI were: edema in 100%, ischemia in 60.5% and cerebral hemorrhage in 15.8% of patients. The most and the least frequent sites of brain lesions were parietal lobe (86.84%) and brain stem (2.63%), respectively. However, we observed no statistically significant association between late seizure and site of brain lesions. Conclusion: Our findings suggested that short-term prognosis for PRES is favorable. Regarding the low rate of late seizure in these patients, it does not seems to be necessary to prescribe antiepileptic drugs.
