Low Impact Development: a new approach in urban runoff management (case study: Sangelaj quarter of Tehran)

Iran is a country with dry and half dry climate and has always dealt with water resources scarcity. Moreover in the past few years Iran has faced serious droughts in dry seasons. On the other hand after the industrial revolution, global warming and changes in the climate conditions of earth have made water supply a more serious issue. All these conditions bring up the necessity of reconsidering storm water runoff management concepts and objectives, since In order for reaching a sustainable development we need to sufficiently use and manage our water resources. Today with the increasing trend of urbanization, we are changing the natural environment more rapidly and we can see the negative effects of our manipulations in the natural hydrologic functions clearly. Urban storm water runoff is one of the important environmental issues in the urban areas. With the increasing trend of urbanization and therefor built, impermeable surfaces, a considerable amount of runoff is produced and directed to the urban drainage system and finally wasted as it becomes polluted and then disposed. In this article we have tried to give design guidelines and strategies for storm water runoff management in a site in the inner historic district in the city of Tehran called Sangelaj according to the LID (Low Impact Development) courses and principles and in order for that, there has been topographic and hydrologic researches and analyses done. LID approach represents a significant advancement in the state of the art in storm water management. LID enhances our ability to protect surface and ground water quality and maintain the integrity of aquatic living resources and ecosystems.
