Indigenous knowledge (IK) is a subject of inquiry across several disciplines.It is discussed in legal contexts in terms of regimes for its protection (e.g.Antons 2010), or as a form of intellectual property (e.g. Curci 2010). IK isalso considered in many writings, within a framework of international legaltreaties such as the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (Biber-Klemm and Cottier 2006, McManis 2007). Some writers have taken a morecritical approach to the use of the intellectual property rights (IPR) regime asa basis for considering IK (e.g. Anderson 2009, Gibson 2005, Brown 2005,Oguamanam 2008, Davis 2006, Agrawal 1995).
