The anesthetic effect of clove flower powder and benzocaine in two different sizes of great sturgeon, Huso huso

Objective: The aims of this study were: to determine the effect of various concentrations of two anaesthetics (clove flower powder and Benzocaine) on induction (partial and total) time and recovery time; to compare their effects on great sturgeon, Huso huso; and to determine the effect of these anaesthetics on different sizes of the fish. Method & Materials: Two different sizes of great sturgeon, Huso huso, with average weight of 15.17 and 271.11 gr were used. Both sizes of fish were exposed to the concentrations of 250, 350 and 450 mg/l of clove flower powder. Benzocaine was administered with concentrations of 50, 75 and 100 mg/l for small fish and 100, 125 and 150 mg/l for large fish. Results & Conclusion: This study suggests the suitability of both anesthetics in anaesthetization of great sturgeon. However, clove flower powder is recommended for anesthetizing great sturgeon because of its accessibility, low cost and safety compared with benzocaine.
