Skin lesions and meat residue of Bluga (Huso huso) fed diets containing Aflatoxin B1

Objective: Huso huso is one of the most important native sturgeon species in the Caspian Sea. The purpose of this investigation was to study skin lesions and meat residues in Bluga after being fed with different levels of dietary AFB1. These factors are important in fresh fish marketability and public health. Method & Materials: 180 fish (weighed 120 ± 10gr) with stocking density of 12 fish/tank, were fed with different levels of AFB1 (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100ppb/kg of diets) under controlled conditions for 15 weeks. Skin lesions evaluated through clinical observations and meat residues determined by HPLC, monthly. Results & Conclusion: Skin lesions, ranged from simple hemorrhage to progressive wounds, were observed in different parts of body, particularly on vent, caudal peduncle, fins, and head. Yellow sores on head region were considerable which led to deterioration of appearance. Meat accumulation of AFB1 in different treatments was not significant but was significantly different from control fish (P<0.01). Different levels of degenerative pathological changes in liver sections, emphasizes the mentioned results. Omitting dietary AFB1 in experimental fish approximately led to meat clearance from AFB1 residues after one month.
