Studying the Relationship between Gender and Speech Interruption: Analysis of Dominance Theory

The present study in sociolinguistics is an attempt for analysing speech interruption as a noticeable linguistic difference between men and women based on dominance theory. The purpose of this study is first evaluating speech interruption as a factor showing control over conversation in Persian context and next studying direct idea expression, changing topics,adverbs and verbs of uncertainty and clarification request as four important factors affectingspeech interruption. These four factors have been analysed in situations with same genders (man-man, woman-woman) and different genders (man-woman, woman-man) in threedifferent Persian movies. Men and women’s behaviour regarding speech interruption wasmeaningfully different in various contexts. In this study, the relationship between four above factors and speech interruption by men and women was studied and the results didn’t justify the dominance theory.
