Effect of Water Soluble Polymers on Physical and Mechanical Properties of a Sandy Soil

Non-Cohesive soils with considerable distresses such as low strength or high permeability may not be appropriate for use as a structural support. Through these defects various types of water soluble polymers are used widely in granular soils improving the soil properties. The main purposes of this technique are to increase in strength and durability of the mixture. A comprehensive laboratory work was carried out in order to study physical and mechanical properties of mixed soils. Chemical additive were prepared using different water percentages along with an amount of polyvinyl acetate or acrylic resin emulsion. Samples were prepared through columns filled with these soils. The experimental results reveal that addition of polymer emulsion improves substantially unconfined compressive strength of the mixed soil.
