Measuring Safety Culture in Aviation Case study: Esfahan Airport

Measuring safety culture has been undertaken in many industries (e.g. oil, nuclear, aviation) over the past twenty years, as a proactive method of collecting safety information about the current level of safety in the organization. However, there has been little work undertaken to develop the safety culture of the designers of these technological systems, to ensure that their designs are endeavoring to reach the highest levels of safety. In this paper we describe the concept of ‘Safety Culture’ and its measurement, with particular regard to aviation. We use two methods for measurement first Reason checklist which is quick but not very accurate; the second method is SCISMS which measure safety culture in four dimensions. Finally we test this model using structural equation modeling (SEM) and we reach a modified model with acceptable fit for Isfahan airport.
