Investigation of Relationship between Self-efficacy, Internal and External Goal-orientation and Students' Cognitive and Metacognitive Strategies

The present research aims to investigate relationship between self-efficacy, internal and external goal orientation and students' cognitive and metacognitive strategies. To this end, Pintrich's Motivational Strategies for Learning questionnaire (MSLQ) (1990) and Wallrend's Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) (1992) were used for surveying 369 students who had been selected by means of cluster sampling method from Rafsanjan City (Iran) high schools. Results of analyses showed that self-efficacy and metacognitive strategies are positive predictors of cognitive strategies mental review, development and organizing. However, external goal orientation was a negative predictor of cognitive strategy development and organizing. Further, results showed that self-efficacy and internal goal orientation are positive predictors of metacognitive strategies. Moreover, self-efficacy was a positive predictor of self-determination
