Size, Structure and Optical Properties of Aluminum and Aluminum Oxide Nanoparticles Prepared by DC Arc Discharge in Different Carrier Media

We study the effects of surrounding liquid environment on size, crystal structure and optical properties ofaluminium based nanoparticles, prepared by DC arc discharge in liquids. DC arc discharge was made between purealuminium electrodes in water, ethanol, methanol and acetone, as liquid carrier media. SEM observations, X-raydiffraction and optical extinction, were employed for characterization of particle size, shape, crystal structure and opticalproperties respectively. The mean particle size for aluminium nanoparticles in acetone and ethanol are respectively, 33nm and 50 nm. Particles prepared in acetone show a very narrow size distribution. In deionised water and in methanol,aluminium oxide nanoparticles with mean size of 37 nm and 36 nm were observed. the colloidal solution is stable in thecase of water and acetone. Nanoparticles in ethanol and methanol, were completely precipitated within 48 hours. In allmedia optical transmissions are the optical characteristics of aluminium and aluminium oxide nanoparticles.Nanoparticles composition and formation mechanisms were related to the chemical nature of the liquids, including dipolemoment of surrounding molecules and some chemical groups formed on the surface of the particles.
