Slope effect on the groin’s performance under the wave and earthquake induced loads; A case study of Amir-Abad beach groin in Caspian Sea

Although considerable volume of information regarding the design loads on coastal protective structures (such as groin and breakwater), but in literature, the main load is taken to be the waveforce and there has not been enough concern on lateral force due to earthquake. In this paper, the constructed groins in the estuary of Amir-Abad beach are modeled and analyzed under the earthquake and wave induced loads. The main objective of this study is to obtain the suitabledimensions for groins to resist the earthquake induced lateral loads. The analyses are performedon a number of cross sections of groins having different side slopes using a multi-purpose FEpackage called ABAQUS. The results obtained from the present study indicate that in some cases and at the different locations along the groin, the earthquake forces can be as important as wave forces and it can affect the results of the analyses
