Towards Achieving Social Capital In Terms Of Sense of Place through Infill Architecture in Historic Urban Quarters

Since the late 1980s Historic Urban Quarters have emerged as a focus of many regeneration efforts. Clearly these important areas of city have their specific identity and character but mostly they lost their viability and new activities especially through new development. New design appearance and its relationship with its surrounding is a series design problem that has become a significant issue which causes weakening of social capital of historic quarters associated with the diminishing of sense of place held by infill architecture. Accordingly this survey considers whether it is possible to identify relationship between the historic environments, sense of place and social capital. In this respect the paper defines the role of infill architecture in retaining sense of place to gain social capital in historic fabric by answering the questions like: What theories can we find to explain the relationship between sense of place, historic environment and social capital? How does new design impact on the sense ofplace in historic quarter?
