Design feasibility of a zero energy neighborhood in Qazvin city

Global warming due to increase in greenhouse gases and its impacts on climate change resulting in air pollution, environmental devastation and spread of different diseases, are all associated with energy consumption. In Iran, the high growth of annual consumption of various fossil fuel has triggered many environmental and socio-economical problems. Building sector with a share of 40 percent in energy consumption plays a major role in energy consumption levels in Iran. The objective of current study is to decrease residential buildings energy consumption and substitute renewable energy for fossil fuel in order to supply energy for the buildings in a framework of zero energy neighborhood unit in Qazvin. The method applied in this study is based on analytical-descriptive method, causal study method and simulation. In this study, following estimating the energy consumption decrease through passive strategies by using Design Builder thermal simulation software, supplying building consumption energy will be implemented using renewable energies. Results show that using thermal insulation and heat capacity of specific materials lead to 33 percent saving in energy consumption. In addition, canopies at the rate of 2.1 percent and the appropriate natural ventilation at a rate of 12 percent decrease building annual energy consumption level (32 residential units). In the following, Reaching the zero energy definition will be achieved using 848 256-watt photovoltaic modules, as well as 24 solar collector and their assimilation with energy grid.
