Strategic Management in Social Entrepreneurship Organizations:past trend and future perspective

Considering day to day environmental changes and more complicated organizationaldecisions, using a general plan which is called strategic plan seems more essential. The adoptionof management techniques, change culture and holistic approach, are signs for tension towardsstrategic management in social entrepreneurship. This paper reviews studies on strategicmanagement in social entrepreneurship organizations, published in the last 25 years in 20 peerreviewed,related journals, and found 37 related papers, and notes the current status andcategorizes these studies using strategic management framework and various socialentrepreneurship structures. These researches are detached based on their focus on socialentrepreneurship or third sector. In another categorization, social entrepreneurship structure andstrategic management section where determined. Structures were detected using GEM’s report onsocial entrepreneurship (2009), and strategic management context was fragmented using Poister’s(2010) research.Results show that most studies (25 papers) were based on nonprofit organizations and a fewon social entrepreneurship (12 papers). Also it shows that there are more studies focusing on therelation between strategic content and implementation (6 papers), while there is no researchfocusing on the effect of environment on strategic management. It was observed that in the lastfive years the number of papers on strategic management in social entrepreneurship has increasedfrom 1 to 10. According to this, studies should be performed specifically on socialentrepreneurship organizations. Considering differences between possible structures in the sector,different strategic management models should be proposed for each structure.
