APPRAISING SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN PAKISTAN– IN MILIEU OF WOMEN REPRESENTATION

Women make up about 27% of the scientists and engineers in Pakistan. The present paper discusses gender parity in relation to science and technology situation in Pakistan. A review of the ratio of women as compared to men in science has been done by considering their number and ratio at different levels of education, science and technology manpower of the country and contribution to R&D activities. The paper also considers the representation of women in Academy of Sciences, which is the supreme scientific organization of Pakistan. The present study also highlights the contribution of women scientists and engineers in terms of patents, impact factor and journal citation index. The aim of this paper is to bring into focus disproportionately low numbers of women in science and technology and to sensitize educators, policy-makers and the scientific community of both genders that national socioeconomic development cannot be realized without making the best use of all sectors of a nation’s population
