The clamping force for butt weld joint during laser welding process was measured. The preset clamping force changes during welding process due to the force induced by thermal effect on small heat affected joint. The thermal expansion, contraction during cooling period, and slight reduction in width of workpieces influence the variation of clamping force across the weld joint. Tensile tests revealed that the reset clamping force increases the weld joint breaking force in general and particularly for an optimum clamping force.
