Influence of Supply Plenum on Jet Hole Flow Structure Applicable to Film Cooling: LES Approach

The large eddy simulation (LES) of film cooling from discrete holes inclined at 35° for two cases, namely, with and without a feeding plenum chamber is carried out. A Reynolds number of approximately 16,000 based on freestream velocity and jet hole diameter, is assumed. The results are generated in terms of the flow field and surface adiabatic effectiveness. Vortical structures emanating from the plenum chamber are tracked through the coolant jet hole and its effects on the issued jet are investigated. Comparison of the present results with the available experimental data shows that existence of supply plenum has a great influence on the flow structures in the jet hole and it leads to the generation of two distinct regions, namely, jetting region and low momentum region in the jet hole, which causes the formation of counter rotating vortex pair (CRVP) within the film hole. Adiabatic effectiveness is also compared with the experimental data and fairly good agreement concerning the spanwise distribution of local effectiveness for the case of with a feeding plenum exists. This confirms that the LES approach predicts the lateral growth of the jet better than the previous RANS study. It is also concluded that realistic inlet turbulence boundary conditions have a very important effect on the correct prediction of flow and thermal fields.
