Mechanical characterization of metals by small punch test (SPT)

Small punch test (SPT) is proposed to evaluate mechanical properties of materials specially those with low availability. In this method, just a small disc-shaped test-piece is needed to obtain valuable mechanical data about the material. In this study, standard AISI thin plate with known mechanical properties is used to correlate conventional mechanical properties (standard tensile test results) with mechanical data obtained fromSPT. Results showed that it is possible to evaluate tensile mechanical properties with SPT data within acceptable error.
