The important collection, maintenance and conservation of seed germplasm resources of oilseed crops

Germplasm resources constitute the building blocks of crop improvement program and supplyingFood security of the world,s rapidly rising population. These are basic raw material and reservoir ofgenes for breeding high‐yielding and disease‐resistant cultivars/varieties/hybrids. Oilseed crops are thechief sources of edible oil. The collection, maintenance, evaluation, conservation and utilization ofgenetic resources in these plants are main contribution of long term successful breeding programs. Theexchange of information on evaluation for quantity and quality characters, biotic and abiotic stressesand genetic resources is much needed at present than in the last. Therefore there are the need forintensifying the research on genetic resources of oilseed crops in the country with emphasizing oncollection, maintenance and conservation of oilseed crops germplasm in respect to the changing globalof plant genetic resources. The success of effective utilization of genetic resources in breeding programsis depends on identification, registration and precise evaluation of germplasms for determiningagronomical characteristics
