A proposal for Iranian - Hellenic - Armenian Cooperation in the Field of Coal

The share of explored coal among the oil and gas reserves in Iran is 7.5% and its non-proved estimation would be about 27%. Based on the studies carried out, coal could have an economic share in the country energy basket, considering environmental aspects. In the Iranian Hellenic-Armenian cooperation area, it is proposed that Iran provides necessary permissions and regulations in order to facilitate extraction, coal washing and preparation, storage and coal fired power plant building near to the coal mines. Iranian companies have enough experience in building of steam power plants that can be used in the proposed coal fired system. Greece has a good experience in exploration, extraction and preparation of thermal coal. This country is an importer of coal with high thermal value like the high quality coal of Mazino mine, in order to mix with internal lignite to improve its thermal value. The coal necessary in Hellenic industries could be imported from Iran. In next years Greece needs to import much more coal in order to supply its new coal fired plants. A part of coal production of project can be allocated to supply the Greece future needs. Hellenic experience and financial support could be used in the proposed cooperation. At the first step of cooperation an enough deep study is necessary to be carried out with the contribution of Hellenic party in order to be used in planning steps. Armenia is an electric power importer from Iran. It is projected the level of power imports from Iran could be increased considerably in next years. Iran can allocate the extra capacity obtained from the new coal fired plants for export to Armenia. The calculated production and transmission cost shows that electricity export to Armenia is economically feasible. Both countries can increase their level of power inter change to improve load factor of their electric networks.
