Steam, which is usually produced in boilers, is one of the essential requirements for oil and gas refineries operations. Boilers consume a lot of fuel to produce steam and their energy consumption optimization is very important to refinery management to decrease the cost and also for environment concerns. The main objective of this paper is to investigate application of advanced control and automation technologies to improve boiler efficiency, optimize its energy and fuel consumption and also minimize energy losses in boilers. In particular, combustion and steam drum level control systems are investigated and proper modifications are proposed. The results indicate considerable amount around 6% of energy saving and boiler efficiency improvement.
