چکیده مقاله:

This work describes the results obtained on the study of reactive processing of polypropylene with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) in the presence of styrene as a comonomer. Values of the mixing torque obtained from the grafting reaction carried out in an internal mixer showed that it could be used as an indicator for grafting efficiency. Addition of a comonomer such as styrene showed significant improvements in grafting efficiency. In order to measure the grafting efficiency quantitatively, titration and Fourier Transfor Infrared (FTIR) techniques were used, and consequently a calibration curve was developed. Also the results of Melt Flow Index (MFI) test were in good aggrement with titration and FTIR tests and showed that increasing the styrene comonomer caused decreasing in the MFI due to the reduction of undesirable β-scission side reaction. However, there is an optimum level of grafting yield for GMA on polypropylene in the presence of styrene comonomer similar to that in the absence of this comonomer. In this work, this optimum in grafting yield was obtained for 9 part of GMA based on 100 part of polypropylene.
