چکیده مقاله:

Ventilation systems have always been a key issue for the construction and operation phases of both road and rail tunnels. The provision of adequate ventilation in road tunnels has become an important concern not only for tunnel designers, operators and regulators, but also for general public. Ventilation systems must provide safety and convenience for the people passing through, in versus of any conditions. For example, the continuous traffic of vehicles can create a considerable quantity of toxic fumes and gases, in this situation a correctly designed ventilation system must keep these contaminations to an allowable level. Furthermore, in the event of fire in a tunnel, such as systems must prevent fire spread and fire growth and control smoke. The importance of a safe designed ventilation system among the general public has caused many studies and investigations be done on this issue in therecent years. These concerns are regarding to the integration of ventilation and suppression systems. Major systems used for ventilation in road tunnels are transverse system and longitudinal ones. Transverse ventilation systems use air ducts to supply and move air along the length of the tunnel, whereas longitudinal ventilation systems use jet fans and generally mounted on the ceiling to move air along the main tunnel void. In this paper, the required quantity of forced airflow by the longitudinal ventilation system to control smoke in the event of a fire and its effect on fire size and fire spread in road tunnels is discussed. The aim is to force the smoke produced by a fire to one side of the fire location using jet fans for creating a smoke free zone for emergency activities.
