چکیده مقاله:

The function of brain oscillations have been debated in recent decades. While early theories considered the brain rhythms as an internal clock for temporal coordination of the nervous system, later hypotheses attributed different perceptual, motor, and higher order cognitive functions to the coordinated activity of the neural populations. Besides hot debates on the functions of the brain oscillations, the mechanisms of the generation of rhythms by neural populations has been extensively explored in recent years. Standard theories for coordinated activity of distributed dynamical systems fail to explain emergence of spatiotemporal order in a nervous system with extremely high variability in the parameters and observation of highly irregular dynamics of individual neurons. In this talk, I will briefly discuss a few possible functions of the brain oscillations and introduce most accepted theories for the mechanisms of the generation of the brain rhythms
