Optical transmitters in optical communication systems send information in a channel more than that of radio systems due to high optical carrier frequency which leads to saving energy and reducing costs. For full utilization of the optical technology capabilities, one must use cross layer design. View of cross layer for wavelength routed optical networks have been provided and is considered because it causes increase data speeds, decrease distance wavelengths and very long optical paths. A challenge arising from growing speed and distance in optical communication which can be solved hardly by the classic layer method is constraints related to the physical layer. The aim is to optimize routing and wavelength in optical communication networks. If there are multiple paths between two networks, routing algorithms are needed to find the best route. Due to signal degradation factors and optical network equipments, the quality of the optical path is affected. Therefore it is recommended that routing optimization evaluated from both the network layer performance and the physical layer performance and the best routing optimization should be chosen based on the overall performances. In this paper, the impact of physical layer impairments on the routing and wavelength allocation for different routing methods is evaluated with regard to both network and physical layers performances. finally, a routing algorithm which leads to lower costs and saving in network equipments, is presented.
