A Review of Affecting Factors on the Formation of Mental Images (Case Study: Golsar Street, Rasht, Iran)

Images, symbols, and semantics were daily stories that are narrated in front of city residents and it means that Iranians in 21st century can perceive society status and city. Urban landscape (cityscape) that provided audiences with a changing and continuous status from landscape to life space consists of a set of symbols and signs. This symbolism allowed the citizens to directly read and perceive a city without any interpreter which helped them create an imagination of space and achieved a sense to identify of a place (place identity). This study analyzed the affecting factors in formation of mental images using a symbolic approach and explained the significant relationship among the existing symbols and signs with the environment theory scientifically and analytically. Finally, this article aims to answer these questions: What are the reasons for creating symbols in city space and how they can affect human? What are the factors creating and affecting the formation of space and environment? Golsar Street, Rasht, Iran has been investigated as a sample and affecting factors of mental image formation have been examined derived from this street and its destructive factors.
