Effect of Nigella Sativa Oil Extract on Anthropometric Parameters in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial

Objectives: Thymoquinone (TQ) is the major active compound in Nigella sativa oil extract that exhibit suitable anti- obesity effects because of their cardiovascular protection, anticancer, insulin sensitivity and immunomodulatory effects effect. The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-obesity properties of Nigella sativa oil extract among Type 2 diabetic patients.Methods: Forty-three patients with diabetes were assigned into two groups in randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Intervention group received two 500 milligram capsule containing nigella sativa oil extract each day, for 8 weeks; the control group will take two placebo capsules (paraffin) per day for the same period of time. Fasting blood samples were collected at baseline and at the end of the trial to measure cytokine and oxidative stress status.Result were analyzed with statistical tests (wilcaxon, mannwhitney, Ancova).Results: Forty-three patients (23 female and 20male) with mean age of 53.5±7.4 and with mean BMI of 28.6±6.3 were participated. difference mean In the intervention group, systolic blood pressure (-8 ± 5/7 vs. 1/5 ± 10/9; P<0/001), diastolic blood pressure (-4/3 ± 3/7 vs. 0/95 ± 7/7; P<0/002), weight (-2/04 ± 2/6 vs. 0/55 ± 1/3; P<0/001), BMI (-0/74 ± 0/89 vs. 0/19 ± 8/1; P<0/001) and Waist (-2/3 ± 1/8 vs. 0/85 ± 0/6; P<0/001) was significantly decreased compared with the control group.Conclusions: This study indicates that Nigella sativa could improve Anthropometric parameters in patients with diabetes mellitus and suggested Nigella sativa may be a beneficial adjunct therapy in this population of patients. It also recommended that additional doses be used in future studies.
