The present study investigated the effect of cultural items instruction through captioned video on listening comprehension of EFL learners at the intermediate level. To achieve this purpose, 22 participants out of 40 were chosen as the sample. The participants took a listening pretest after they had watched thirty minutes of the movie. The subjects were randomly divided into two equal groups, the control and experimental groups. The mean-scores of the groups in the pretest revealed the homogeneity of the subjects. In a 3-week-period, both the control and experimental groups were exposed to listening strategy treatment, but the experimental group dealt with cultural items instruction in addition to listening strategies. At the end of the experiment, both groups took a posttest in parallel with the pretest to see whether or not any changes happened regarding their listening proficiency. A Paired-Sample -t-test proved that the listening comprehension ability of the participants had improved significantly. An Independent-Sample t-test was then run to compare the mean-scores of the groups in the posttest. The findings showed that the experimental group performance was significantly better than the control group indicating the effectiveness of the treatment. Finally, the results showed that cultural awareness has a considerable impact on listening comprehension of Iranian EFL learners.
