The side-effects of amitraz, buprofezin and propargite were studied on Encarsia formosa (Gahan)(Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) in the laboratory using a life table response experiment and the IOBC systemfor their related toxicity. Bioassays were conducted by dipping bean leaves, containing whitefly third instarnymphs (Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood) parasitised by E. formosa, in insecticide solutions, orcaging adult parasitoids in treated Petri dishes. Of the insecticides tested, buprofezin with 19.87% and11.87% mortality caused no significant mortality in adult and pupae, respectively but amitraz had the highestlevel of toxicity to the adult (100% mortality) and pupae (83.3% mortality) parasitoids. Buprofezin andpropargite caused no adverse effect on fecundity and longevity, while amitraz did cause significantreductions in fecundity and longevity of adults. Life table assay indicated that buprofezin and propargitecaused no significant effect on the intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm), while amitraz caused a 7.03%reduction in the rm value. According to the IOBC classification of toxicity, buprofezin were found to beharmless for pupa and adult, and amitraz was seriously harmful for adult of parasitiod. Based on both the lifetable and IOBC methodology, buprofezin and propargite were relatively safe for E. formosa and they canprobably be used for integrated pest management in integration with this parasitoid.
