Recently, research on essential oils as insect repellents has been attracted for imploying in integrated pestmanagement. In this study, the repellent effects of essential oils from Foeniculum vulgare Miller (Apiaceae),Teucrium polium Boiss. (Lamiaceae) and Satureja hortensis L. (Lamiaceae) were examined on 2 day-oldadults of cowpea seed beetle, Callosobrochus maculates. Bioassays were conducted with concentrations of 0,1, 1.5, 2 and 3 μl/ml acetone plus control, in 4 replications, at 28±2 °C and 60±5% R.H. in dark condition.The number of repelled insects was recorded 24 hours after exposure. The results indicated that the repellentactivity of essential oils on beetles increased with oil concentration. Males were more susceptible to repellentactivity of oils than females. In all tested concentration, the essential oil of S. hortensis showed the mostrepellent activity while that of F. vulgare showed the least repellent acitivity on beetles. The mean repellencypercentage of F. vulgare, T. polium and S. hortensis oils at the highest concentration (3 μl/ml acetone) were66.82, 84.93 and 95.92% on males and 59.28, 76.06 and 88.8 % on females, respectively. The resultsdemonstrated that the essential oils of these plants can be considered as the potential protectants againstcowpea seed beetles.
